One of the big trends in home kitchen design is the use of undermount kitchen sinks. Not only are they a big upgrade in appearance compared to a top mount, or drop in sink, but the chances of leaking or having dirt accumulate in the seams is far less than other kinds of sinks. Of course, this is dependent on the undermount sink being propoerly installed.
There are many professionals who will do a propoer installation of your undermount kitchen sink for you, but the truth is it is a very doable job for most home owners as long as they follow some simple instructions.
Your sink probably came with an instruction sheet, but we will go over the basic sequence here. First of all, remember that a sink filled with water and dishes can be quite heavy. For this reason you must have a strong countertop for your sink to mount to, such as marble or granite. If you have a weaker material for you countertop, like particle board, wait until you have strengthened or replaced the counter before installing the undermount kitchen sink.
If you can, place the countertop with the bottom side up for the next few steps. this will make it a lot easier. if your counter is already in place, you will need to clamp the sink in place until the epoxy dries completely.
Cut a hole in the countertop for your sink using the template that you received with the sink. Place the template where you want your sink to go and outline the cut before actually cutting. This is the hardest part of the process, so if you don’t think you can do it properly it pays to have a professional unstall your sink. Next, polish the edge of the hole. This is the edge that will sit just over the perimeter of your sink, so you want it to have a nice finish. Polishing this edge will also keep it from cracking or chipping later on.
Clean the underside of the counter top with alcohol. It must be free of any dirt or dust so you have a good seal and the glue can adhere propoerly. Now place a bead of silicone calk all around the edge of the hole on the underside of the countertop.
Mix the epoxy per the instructions that came with it. Apply it per the instructions that came with your sink. Although it will seem to cure very quickly, let the sink sit until the next day to be sure you have a good seal and bond.
Finally, replace the countertop, attach your plumbing, and check for leaks. Your new undermount kitchen sink is ready to be used and admired!
